Knitting, with Dogs

Two things:

1.  I drank the Kool-Aid.  I signed up for Facebook.  /facepalm/

2.  If you're going to do something crazy on Teh Intarwebz, at least TRY not to be stupid when you do it!( (Internet dramaz = entertaining.)

Two other things:

1. I signed up for a handspun/roving swap on Ravelry.  I've dyed my roving, now I've got the spinning to do.  I need to do 8 oz. by the end of February.

2.  Thing-a-Day 2009 is starting up on 2/1.   I tried to do this last year, but was interrupted by my dad's final illness and death.  :(  I think I'll try again this year, unofficially, because I have a bit of superstitious dread about starting over again.  (As in: what if I start again and someone else dies???  I know, not logical, but that's why it's SUPERSTITIOUS dread.  Because it's NOT logical.)

I've got some ideas of what I want to do, but we'll see what happens.

Bad dogs

No, not mine this time.  :)  I was reading the recent Metafilter links tonight, and of them was a link to David Kaufmann and his collection of medieval Hebrew manuscripts. 

Now, I don't know much about medieval  manucripts, but I do know that sometimes the marginalia is interesting.  I was looking at this picture, and scrolling up and down and left and right, because the screen on my Eee PC is small, and you  have to do that.  A lot.  (But I'm used to it pretty much by now.  And like John Scalzi said, when you go back to the desktop, you feel like you're looking at a Jumbotron.  But I digress....)

Anyway, as I was scrolling around that image, I saw something that made me smile.  I cropped it out for y'all:

 

Here's how I see this:  the dog has grabbed a chicken and is running off with it.  The farm wife is chasing him with her distaff, with the spindle trailing wildly behind her.

Pretty neat, huh?

I don't have anything like enough patience in my whole LIFE to do something like this.

Oh yeah.

It was just me and the dogs at home, watching the Inauguration.  Well, just us, if you don't count the Twitter feed, the chat room and the Inauguration thread on Ravelry that I was watching.

All my best wishes and good hopes to the new President and First Family.

Insomnia. I has it.

At least some times.  Like last night. 

I was working on a pair of fingerless mitts for a friend a catching up on the last couple of episodes of Season 1 of Dr. Who.  I thought, "I'll just get both done and finish darning in the ends and knitting the thumbs tomorrow."  But when I finished both main parts, the show wasn't over, so I kept watching and knitting.

I finished both mitts and then I was partway through the next-to-last episode.  So I pulled out the yarn and needles for another project (Entrelac Cowl).  I had a little problem with the instructions as I was knitting it, so the last episode of season 1 ended and I'm still knitting. 

And it was about 2:30 am.  I wasn't really tired, but I thought, let me just make sure I understand how to end this row and start the next one.  So I kept knitting.

I knitted through a "Make a bazillion bucks through questionable real estate deals" informercial, through a "Take advantage of the tax misfortunes of people around you to buy up their houses" infomercial, and a fitness program for people who appeared to have been athletes or Navy Seals or something before they started the exercise program.

 Hey, I was busy knitting, and couldn't be arsed to change the channel.   Sue me.

And then it was 4:45 am, and I figured I should put the knitting down even though I STILL didn't feel tired.

But I ended my row, made sure I could turn and go back, and then turn AGAIN for another round.

And yes, when the fatigue finally hit, it knocked me down hard.

Oh well, better now, and hopefully I'll sleep tonight.

Sometimes you just get a craving

I've just spent the past 3.5 hours restoring my lil 'puter. It burped and told me it couldn't find a system file, so I just did the restore from the system disk. (First time I've done that on a computer. Thank Og my sister gave me that external DVD drive for Christmas, and that it WORKED! I lost a few things, nothing too important. I'd backed up most anything I wanted to save. And honestly, I was thinking about going through and doing this anyway, though RIGHT AFTER I'd done a backup, in a CONTROLLED manner. Oh well, as something I read the other day said, my Higher Self made the computer make the decision for me. Or something. Anyway, so far, so good.

Task list

Wash curtains that Jasper pulled down by lying on the hem and rolling. -- check

Curse poor bracket mounting skill that caused curtains to be so poorly mounted that they'd fall so easily -- check

Try to figure out how to re-mount the curtain brackets without making a big ass hole in the wall -- check

Hang out in chat room reading/talking about Teh Dramaz -- check

Suffer eye strain from excessive eye-rolling at people who have nothing better to do than cause issues -- check

Distaff Day

Had a good afternoon at the PHG today.  I got to play spinning wheel problem-solver, and got to talk to some new (to me, at least) folks there.

Found out one of my friends has a marriage that's going to end.  :(  Not good news, but she's a strong lady and she'll be ok, in time.

Janet and I left the meeting and went to Roswell to a shop specializing in lampwork beading and glass art supplies.  That was interesting, and I'm glad to know where it is.  I'm  not up for starting something new and different right this sec, but Janet's well on her way and doing well, as usual.  But Janet's brilliant.  I'm in awe of Janet.

The next project

I've started CeCe, the Bonne Marie Burns (ChicKnits) pattern.  I've got about 7" done so far.  I'll have to write out all the steps for the front shaping, because I'm a moron who can't do that stuff in my head.

My little laptop is a godsend for stuff like this.  When I start a new project, I open up a Notepad file and just make notes there.  Because I also can't remember anything anymore.  When I'm not doing something else, I ALWAYS have my Eee PC handy, so it works better for me than a notebook did.  I always misplace notebooks.

In other news, we watched Cloverfield today.  I think I'm now spoiled for monster  movies, because I'll always be thinking of the poor schmucks on the ground.  :(  

We also watched some of the extras.  When they talked about the Cloverfield monster being a baby, I immediately thought of Gorgo.  Anybody else remember that one?

Saturday is Distaff Day at the Peachtree Handspinners Guild.  Hope to see lots of the local spinners there!
